Is The Law Of Attraction In Poker Just Placebo?

One of my followers asked me this question recently. In order to look into this on a deeper level, we need to consider a few things.

FIRST I’m going to ask this question…

WHY DO TOP LEVEL UFC FIGHTERS GO INTO THE OCTAGON THE DAY BEFORE THE FIGHT AND HAVE THEIR HAND RAISED?

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe GSP, arguably one of the best pound for pound fighters the world has ever seen, did this before every fight. Why? Because he believes that putting the image of him winning in his mind was a powerful tool.

SECOND, if you still think the law of attraction is

AIRY FAIRY BULLSHIT…

do you also think that learning poker strategy is placebo too?

If you are in that camp, then STOP reading this blog post because I can not help you. What I’ve realized is that no matter what your position is, there will always someone that takes the opposite position. Usually this is due to them being called dumb as a child, so they are trying to overcompensate for the past. And there’s no way to convince them otherwise so it’s literally a waste of time.

Getting back to poker. If you believe that studying poker is going to improve your game. Which you do if you’ve read this far. Then you will also believe that poker mindset will help also.

YOU MUST FIRST HAVE THE IDEA OF STUDYING POKER BEFORE YOU WILL DO IT.

The chair you are sitting on, at one point in time, didn’t exist. It only existed in someone’s mind. It came to fruition, because someone took their idea in their mind and…

BROUGHT IT INTO REALITY…

by taking massive action.

The same is true with the law of attraction as it applies to poker.

First you may have goals like these:

  1. Improve average monthly income
  2. Improve average hourly rate
  3. Improve your poker tournament win rate, or at least final table rate

In order to achieve those goals…

YOU MUST FOLLOW A PLAN.

This plan might include putting in more hours studying the game and studying your sticking points, finding better places to play with looser tables, or simply working hard on your decision making process to MAKE IT MORE ACCURATE.

As I’ve said before, there’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Even if you know you should call or to fold, sometimes you do the opposite because of

HIDDEN SUBCONSCIOUS BLOCKS…

that prevent you from achieving a higher level of success.

Let’s talk a little more about how to achieve your poker goals.

The FIRST THING is you need to have clear goals. If you haven’t written your goals down on paper, or in a computer file, you are making a mistake. It’s important for you to see your goals written down. A good place for this is behind your computer desk on the wall, so you can see them daily. Since you will most likely be spending time in front of your computer almost every day.

Be crystal clear with your goals. Don’t muddy the waters by leaving them vague.

For example:

My income will improve next month.

While it sounds good at first, there are a couple issues with this goal.

FIRST, it’s unclear what you want.

YOU MUST BE CRYSTAL CLEAR TO YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND, TELLING IT EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT.

SECOND, it’s stated in the future. The future & past don’t exist except in our minds. They are just an illusion. Actually life itself is an illusion in many ways, but that’s the topic of a separate article.

Getting back to poker…. if you set a goal as occurring at some time in the future, you may never get there because even if you did, it would be

MOVED AGAIN TO ANOTHER POINT IN THE FUTURE…

You will always be chasing this phantom goal, and never actually getting there. This is why it’s so KEY, to state things in the present tense.

And more specifically, in the first person, present tense and positive.

So let’s assume you are making 3K a month. Instead of saying, my income will improve ‘next’ month. You should say,

‘My average monthly income IS $5000 per month.’

Or you could say,

my average monthly income IS $10K per month.

Make sure to include a USD sign in the statement. You need to be specific. You want to avoid manifesting 5000 in monopoly money. All kidding aside, avoid leaving room for your affirmations & goals to manifest in ways other than you’ve intended.

AVOID SETTING GOALS TOO HIGH!

As a rule of thumb, you want to err on the side of delusion. But it’s very unlikely, although I wouldn’t rule it out, a person going from owning only the t-shirt on their back and 10 dollars, to becoming a billionaire overnight.

This is why it’s important to be somewhat realistic with your goals, but I want you to avoid too much realism because it can hold you back from your dreams as well. It’s finding a delicate balance.

THIS IS A PARADOXICAL CONCEPT AND ONE WE HAVE TO LIVE WITH

I’ve made the mistake in the past of trying to LEAPFROG my goals too quickly, and it ended up backfiring. This is the same reason many people avoid going from playing 1-2 NL to 10-20 NL and skipping the limits in between. But I won’t judge anyone that does that, if they truly believe in their heart and every cell in their body they can do it, they most likely can. Anything is possible, and I keep an open mind to anything happening because I’ve seen some crazy things in my life.

To finish, I will add a story about me that happened near the beginning of my spiritual journey. I was walking back to my condo in downtown Las Vegas. Looking back, I can’t even remember why, but I was thinking to myself, ‘it would be better if a truck ran me over and I wouldn’t have to deal with life anymore’. I came up to a crosswalk, and a group of people got in front of me which really pissed me off, so it slowed me down about 20 seconds. Once I got around them, a truck ran a red light, right where I was going to be had those people not been there. This was a big awakening moment for me, about how we manifest what we think about either good or bad.

THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND DOESN’T UNDERSTAND GOOD OR BAD, IT’LL MANIFEST WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT.

And one more thing. Creating a VISION BOARD of your poker successes can be a huge tool to use to keep your mindset in the right place. Every time you have a big poker win, either cash game or tournament, start collecting these photos and put them on a poster and hang it in your room. This will help you to continue manifesting wins.

Keep Hustling,
